My Bio

Negus Adeyemi is a Brooklyn-Based African-Caribbean-American poet, author, and teaching artist currently serving as Poet-In-Residence for I Am Caribbeing. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Barbadian parents and raised in New Jersey, he was immersed in storytelling from an early age. His father, a calypsonian and folk musician, filled his upbringing with ancestral rhythms that continue to shape the spirit and sound of his work.

Though he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Negus ultimately answered a deeper calling in the transformative power of spoken word poetry. His work functions as both mirror and bridge, exploring identity, healing, cultural memory, and spiritual awareness.

A dynamic performer with a global reach, Negus has shared his work in spaces ranging from university lecture halls to correctional facilities, using poetry as a tool for reflection, empowerment, and connection. Beyond the stage, he facilitates poetry workshops throughout New York City public schools and within the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). Committed to engaging youth impacted by the justice system, he has also led workshops at Rikers Island, Horizon Correctional Facility and The Children’s Village. Aiming to empower young people to use creative expression as a pathway to personal healing and collective advocacy.

Negus is the author of six poetry collections, including Crownshockra and Heirbender (2021). Expanding into digital and musical landscapes, he has released a growing catalog of spoken word recordings, including the albums Ogun’s Son and Reigning Jubilantly, along with singles such as Bajan Tuh Bajan (feat. Adrian Green), Sweet Ode To Los Barbados (feat. Archie Miller), Black Boy (feat. Amaya Husbands) and Young Boy (feat. Makonnen Adeyemi).

Through his bespoke poetic greeting card line and collaborations with artists including DJ Spider and The God Draz, Negus remains committed to honoring ancestral traditions while expanding the boundaries of contemporary cultural expression.
